EDITORIAL POLICY / CORRECTIONS & COMPLAINTS POLICY

ACCRA HYPE

Effective Date: 8/28/2026
Last Updated: 8/28/2026

1. PURPOSE

Accra Hype is committed to producing and publishing responsible, accurate, fair and relevant digital media content.

This Editorial Policy / Corrections & Complaints Policy (“Editorial Policy”) establishes the principles and procedures that guide our editorial work across:

  • www.accrahype.com;

  • Facebook;

  • Instagram;

  • TikTok;

  • X;

  • Snapchat;

  • YouTube; and

  • other official Accra Hype platforms.

It also explains how individuals and organisations may raise concerns about published material and request corrections.

This Policy should be read together with the Accra Hype Terms of Use, Privacy Policy and Copyright Policy.

2. EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE

Accra Hype seeks to maintain editorial independence.

Advertising, sponsorship or commercial relationships do not automatically determine our editorial opinions or coverage.

Advertisers and sponsors do not have the right to dictate independent editorial coverage merely because they purchase advertising or sponsored services.

However, paid or sponsored material may be created and published pursuant to a separate commercial agreement.

Commercial content should be appropriately identified so that users can distinguish advertising or sponsored material from independent editorial content.

3. ACCURACY

We aim to publish information that is accurate, relevant and reasonably verified.

Depending on the nature of a story, our editorial process may involve:

  • checking available source material;

  • reviewing public records;

  • contacting relevant individuals or organisations;

  • comparing information from multiple sources;

  • reviewing photographs or videos;

  • checking dates, names and locations;

  • distinguishing confirmed information from allegations or claims; and

  • updating stories when material information changes.

We recognise that errors can occur, particularly when reporting rapidly developing events.

When a material error is identified, we seek to correct it appropriately.

4. BREAKING NEWS

Breaking-news situations may involve incomplete or rapidly changing information.

In such circumstances, Accra Hype may publish information that is subsequently updated as additional facts become available.

Where appropriate, we may clearly indicate that information is developing or has not yet been independently verified.

We may update headlines, articles, captions, videos or social-media posts when material facts change.

5. SOURCES

Accra Hype may obtain information from:

  • interviews;

  • public statements;

  • press releases;

  • government or institutional sources;

  • public records;

  • eyewitnesses;

  • journalists;

  • contributors;

  • event organisers;

  • public figures;

  • social-media posts;

  • third-party media;

  • agencies;

  • businesses; and

  • other sources.

Where reasonably appropriate, we may identify the source of information.

We may also protect confidential sources where we consider confidentiality necessary and appropriate.

6. SOURCE VERIFICATION

Where practical, we seek to assess the reliability of information before publication.

The level of verification may depend on:

  • the seriousness of the allegation;

  • the urgency of the story;

  • the availability of evidence;

  • the reliability of the source;

  • whether the information is already publicly established; and

  • the potential impact on individuals or organisations.

A social-media post alone should not automatically be treated as proof that an allegation or claim is true.

7. ALLEGATIONS AND UNVERIFIED CLAIMS

Where an allegation cannot reasonably be established as fact, we seek to present it as an allegation or claim rather than as an established fact.

We may use language such as:

  • “alleged”;

  • “according to”;

  • “the person stated”;

  • “the organisation said”;

  • “reports indicate”; or

  • other language that accurately reflects the status of the information.

The wording will depend on the circumstances.

8. RIGHT OF RESPONSE

Where appropriate, individuals or organisations who are the subject of serious allegations or material criticism may be given a reasonable opportunity to respond.

A response may be included in the original story, added later, or published separately depending on the circumstances.

The absence of a response does not necessarily prevent publication where Accra Hype reasonably determines that publication is justified.

Where a person declines to comment, we may state that the person or organisation was contacted but did not respond.

9. DEFAMATION AND REPUTATIONAL HARM

Accra Hype takes allegations capable of seriously damaging a person's or organisation's reputation seriously.

We seek to distinguish:

  • verified facts;

  • allegations;

  • opinions;

  • commentary;

  • satire; and

  • claims made by third parties.

Publication of a claim does not necessarily mean Accra Hype adopts that claim as fact.

We may refuse to publish material where we reasonably believe the legal or factual basis is insufficient.

10. PUBLIC FIGURES AND PEOPLE IN THE PUBLIC EYE

Public figures, celebrities, politicians, entertainers, business leaders, athletes and other persons in the public eye may receive media coverage because of their public activities or matters of legitimate public interest.

However, public status does not automatically eliminate a person's privacy or other legal rights.

We seek to avoid unnecessary intrusion into genuinely private matters unless there is a legitimate editorial or public-interest reason for publication.

11. PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS

We exercise additional caution when reporting on private individuals who are not public figures.

We seek to avoid unnecessary publication of:

  • personal contact information;

  • residential addresses;

  • private communications;

  • sensitive personal information;

  • identifying information about vulnerable individuals; or

  • other information that is not reasonably necessary for the story.

12. CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE PERSONS

Accra Hype seeks to exercise particular care when publishing information involving:

  • children;

  • victims of abuse;

  • victims of sexual offences;

  • vulnerable individuals;

  • persons experiencing serious distress; and

  • individuals whose safety may reasonably be affected by publication.

Where appropriate, identifying details may be withheld or modified.

13. IMAGES AND VIDEOS

Photographs and videos may be obtained from:

  • Accra Hype photographers and videographers;

  • contributors;

  • licensed sources;

  • event organisers;

  • public sources;

  • social-media platforms; or

  • other lawful sources.

We seek to verify the context of visual material where reasonably possible.

We do not intentionally present an old photograph or video as new where doing so would materially mislead audiences.

Where an image is illustrative rather than an actual depiction of the reported event, we may identify it appropriately.

14. USER-SUBMITTED MATERIAL

Accra Hype may receive photographs, videos, tips, messages and other material from members of the public.

Submission does not guarantee publication.

Before publishing User Content, we may consider:

  • authenticity;

  • relevance;

  • public interest;

  • source reliability;

  • legality;

  • potential harm;

  • copyright;

  • privacy;

  • whether the material has been manipulated; and

  • whether additional verification is required.

Users are responsible for ensuring that they have the right to submit material.

15. SOCIAL-MEDIA CONTENT

Social-media content may be used as a source of information, but the existence of a post, video or photograph on social media does not by itself establish its accuracy.

We may verify social-media material through:

  • original-source checks;

  • timestamps;

  • location information;

  • additional reporting;

  • reverse-image or visual checks where available;

  • direct communication with the account holder; or

  • corroborating sources.

16. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND DIGITAL TOOLS

Accra Hype may use digital tools, including artificial-intelligence-assisted tools, in aspects of its editorial or production workflow.

Such tools may assist with:

  • research organisation;

  • transcription;

  • translation;

  • grammar;

  • editing;

  • summarisation;

  • production;

  • image or video workflows; or

  • other operational tasks.

AI-generated or AI-assisted information should not automatically be treated as accurate.

Where AI tools materially contribute to published content, Accra Hype may conduct appropriate human review and verification.

We will not knowingly present fabricated AI-generated material as authentic documentary evidence.

Where an image, video, audio recording or other material is substantially AI-generated or manipulated and its nature is material to the audience's understanding, we may identify it appropriately.

17. OPINION AND COMMENTARY

Accra Hype may publish:

  • opinion;

  • commentary;

  • criticism;

  • analysis;

  • satire;

  • reviews; and

  • editorial viewpoints.

Opinion should be distinguishable from factual reporting where reasonably necessary.

The expression of an opinion does not necessarily represent the personal views of every Accra Hype employee, contributor or advertiser.

18. SATIRE AND ENTERTAINMENT

Accra Hype may publish entertainment, humour, satire, parody or similar material.

Such material may not be intended to represent literal factual reporting.

Where reasonably necessary, we may identify material as satire, parody, entertainment or commentary.

19. CORRECTIONS

Accra Hype welcomes legitimate corrections.

A correction may be appropriate where we determine that published material contains a material factual error.

Depending on the circumstances, a correction may involve:

  • editing an article;

  • adding a correction note;

  • updating a caption;

  • correcting a headline;

  • updating a social-media post;

  • publishing a correction;

  • removing inaccurate material; or

  • another appropriate remedy.

20. MINOR ERRORS

Not every editorial change will require a formal correction notice.

We may silently correct minor errors such as:

  • spelling;

  • punctuation;

  • formatting;

  • typographical mistakes; or

  • other non-material errors.

Where an error materially affects the meaning of a story, we will seek to provide a more visible correction where appropriate.

21. CORRECTION REQUESTS

If you believe an Accra Hype publication contains a material factual error, please contact us.

A correction request should include:

  1. your full name;

  2. your contact information;

  3. the title of the article, video or post;

  4. the URL or direct link, where available;

  5. the date of publication;

  6. the specific statement you believe is inaccurate;

  7. an explanation of why it is inaccurate;

  8. the correct information; and

  9. supporting evidence where available.

  • update the article;

  • add a clarification;

  • publish a correction;

  • contact the relevant journalist or contributor;

  • request supporting evidence;

  • decline the request; or

  • take another appropriate action.

A disagreement with an opinion does not necessarily constitute a factual error.

24. REQUESTS TO REMOVE CONTENT

Accra Hype does not automatically remove accurate historical or editorial material merely because an individual requests removal.

Removal requests will be assessed based on the circumstances, including:

  • accuracy;

  • public interest;

  • legal obligations;

  • privacy;

  • safety;

  • the age of the material;

  • severity of any alleged harm;

  • whether the information remains relevant;

  • whether publication was lawful; and

  • other applicable considerations.

Where correction rather than removal is appropriate, we may correct or update the material.

Nothing in this Policy prevents Accra Hype from removing material where we consider removal appropriate.

25. PRIVACY COMPLAINTS

If your complaint concerns the collection or processing of your personal information, please use the Accra Hype Data Protection / Privacy Request process.

Privacy matters are governed primarily by our Privacy Policy.

26. COPYRIGHT COMPLAINTS

If your complaint concerns copyright ownership or unauthorised use of intellectual property, please use the Accra Hype Copyright & Intellectual Property Policy.

A copyright complaint should provide sufficient information for us to investigate.

27. COMPLAINTS ABOUT ADVERTISING

Complaints concerning paid advertisements or sponsored content may be submitted to:

Advertising/Commercial Contact: [INSERT]

Where the complaint concerns factual or legal claims supplied by an advertiser, we may refer the matter to the advertiser for clarification or supporting evidence.

Depending on the nature of the complaint, we may:

  1. acknowledge receipt;

  2. review the relevant content;

  3. consult the journalist, editor or contributor;

  4. examine source material;

  5. request additional information;

  6. contact the complainant;

  7. contact the subject of the story;

  8. determine whether an error occurred; and

  9. take appropriate corrective action.

Not every complaint will result in a change to published material.

30. URGENT LEGAL MATTERS

If you believe content creates an immediate and serious legal or safety issue, please clearly mark your communication:

“URGENT LEGAL / SAFETY MATTER”

and provide sufficient information for us to understand the urgency.

Nothing in this Policy prevents any person from exercising their legal rights or contacting an appropriate regulator, law-enforcement authority or court.

31. ANONYMOUS COMPLAINTS

We may consider anonymous complaints where sufficient information is provided.

However, providing contact information may allow us to seek clarification and investigate the complaint more effectively.

32. ABUSIVE OR FRIVOLOUS COMPLAINTS

Accra Hype welcomes legitimate complaints but may decline to engage with communications that are:

  • threatening;

  • abusive;

  • harassing;

  • discriminatory;

  • fraudulent;

  • repetitive without new information; or

  • clearly intended to disrupt our operations.

This does not prevent a person from raising a legitimate legal or regulatory concern.

33. LEGAL REQUESTS

Accra Hype may respond to valid legal requests, court orders, regulatory requests and other legally binding requirements.

Where legally permitted, we may seek clarification or legal advice before taking action.

34. EDITORIAL RECORDS

Where appropriate, Accra Hype may maintain records concerning:

  • correction requests;

  • complaints;

  • editorial decisions;

  • source material;

  • changes to published content; and

  • legal correspondence.

Such information will be handled in accordance with applicable law and our Privacy Policy.

35. ADVERTISING AND EDITORIAL SEPARATION

Accra Hype seeks to maintain a reasonable distinction between independent editorial content and paid commercial content.

A commercial relationship does not automatically entitle an advertiser to:

  • favourable editorial coverage;

  • suppression of legitimate editorial coverage;

  • control over independent editorial decisions; or

  • removal of unrelated editorial content.

Sponsored content will be handled according to the relevant commercial agreement and applicable disclosure requirements.

36. POLITICAL AND PUBLIC-INTEREST CONTENT

Accra Hype may report on political figures, public institutions, elections, government activity, public controversies and matters of public interest.

Where appropriate, we seek to distinguish reporting from political advocacy, opinion or commentary.

Coverage of a political individual, party, organisation or public institution does not by itself indicate endorsement.

37. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

Where a material conflict of interest could reasonably affect editorial independence, Accra Hype may take appropriate steps to manage or disclose the conflict.

Commercial relationships should not automatically determine independent editorial conclusions.

38. CORRECTIONS TO SOCIAL-MEDIA POSTS

Where an error appears in a social-media post, Accra Hype may:

  • edit the post where the platform permits;

  • publish a correction;

  • add a clarification;

  • delete and repost corrected material; or

  • take another appropriate action.

The correction method may depend on the functionality of the relevant platform.

39. ARCHIVED MATERIAL

Older content may be retained as part of Accra Hype's editorial archive.

Updating or correcting an archived article does not necessarily require deletion of the original publication record.

Where appropriate, a correction or update may be added to the archived material.

40. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

Accra Hype may update this Editorial Policy from time to time.

The latest version will be published on our website with an updated “Last Updated” date.

41. GOVERNING LAW

This Policy is governed by the laws of the Republic of Ghana, subject to applicable mandatory legal requirements.

Nothing in this Policy limits any legal right available to a person under applicable law.
